#MEMADEMAY2019: DAY 10/31

22 May 2019

Hey peeps,

This is the second week of  #memademay2019.

It was so hot today I was glad to have this light airy dress. I don't really know about fabrics but I think this is some sort of gauze fabric, I don't think it's cheesecloth though, dunno why, it just feels like gauze to me.

Can I just be honest with you guys and say, this is the second time I'm wearing this dress since I made it.
But I got so many compliments from it this 2nd time around, more than the first time, I'm stunned especially since I'm not so sure what it is about this dress but I don't like it on me, SMHHHHH.

Anyways, all the compliments have inspired me to give it another try.

Im not going to say much about it because theres going to be a blog post (already written most of it, just laziness holding things up) where I go into details about the dress.

#MEMADEMAY2019: DAY 9/31

Hey peeps,
For this week of #memademay, I have for the first time worn separates that are both me made, and this is the type of vibe I want for future #memademays and for my wardrobe eventually.

I wouldn't even mind including underwear, sleepwear, sports wears, handbags, etc.

Now, for the outfits.

The top I made a longgggg while ago, I wear it loads and I remember I saw this fashion & style youtuber showing tops she'd bought from H&M and I looked at the top and thought HMMMMMMM

“I can make that”

The skirt I made much later on, but, it was my first knit project and for the first time I understood what other sewist meant when they said: "oh this is a quick make".

I never used to get it because everything took me so long to make and I sewed with woven mostly.

So, yeah, this was a super quick make in my world, it took me only an hour, from cutting to the last stitch. And why wouldn't it LOL, it's got no darts or lining, just the skirt.

My twin needle also made an appearance in the sewing of this skirt.

As I pulled out the skirt to wear, I was reminded that I need more of these types of pencil skirts in my life especially as they're so quick to sew up.

I've already bought some black, cream and animal print knit fabrics to sew up some more skirts.

I'll be sure to blog about them when they're all sewn up.

Also, if you look closely you'll see that this entire outfit is what I'm wearing in my author page on the blog and it's also my youtube thumbnail LOL.

See you guys on my next me made outfit.

DIY Maxi Skirt 3 (Tutorial)

17 May 2019

Hey peeps,

This is the final post for the maxi skirt tutorial, thank you all so much for sticking with it.

There isn't much to save except this part contains little elements here and there that bring the skirt together completely, so it's important.

Also if you watch till the very end I do prance about in the skirt for a bit LOL.

But, seriously, I'm toying with the idea of doing lookbooks like the style channels (someday). And why not show off your hard work that is so you?

Let me know your thoughts on the subject and don't forget to drop your email, our friend's list is full of other fun sewists who are enjoying their sewing journey.

#MEMADEMAY2019: DAY 5/31

5 May 2019

For my first #memademay I decided to also do like a photo blog series of my makes that I've worn & how I've styled them.

I made this top to go with my Ankara maxi skirt, which I do have a tutorial on the blog.

For this top, it was my first time doing a raglan sleeve and I decided to go a bit extra and add some zipper detail to the sleeves, it came together quite quick at least faster than I normally sew LOL.

I like my styling here, and it has spurred me on to think of adding more solid colours to my wardrobe.

This is my 2nd me made look of the week, so pledge for this week has been honoured.

Next week here I come.............

#MEMADEMAY2019: DAY 2/31

2 May 2019

Hey peeps,

Soooooo, it's the month of May, and, that means  #memadeMay is finally here.

I made my pledge time ago because I'm all about that life lol.

Anyways I think I'll be posting my makes on here all well, it'll not be much blogging or maybe more like photo blogging LOL if there is such a thing.

Enter my first make,

This is my most worn & fav dress ever (for right now) it fits almost well but it a perfect dress for the heat because the fabric is so light.

This is also my go-to silhouette for dresses, fit & flare, I think they fit me quite nicely.

This dress brings back a lot of memories because it was the fabric the men in my family wore for my grandfather's funeral (the women wore the red colorway).

So here it is, my first dive into the memademay pool, there still 29 more days to go, let's see how I do.

DIY Maxi Skirt 2 (Tutorial)

21 April 2019

Hey peeps,

I hope you got through the first part of our tutorial which showed you how to measure and cut out a simple pattern for a maxi skirt.

Remember, like I said, even though it is a gathered, lined and with inseam pockets, you can decide to do away with those.

For this second part, we are going through the stitching process in great detail.

Please do not hesitate to ask questions about anything that is not clear,

I really do want everyone to give the skirt a try.

If you do give the skirt a try, pls be sure to tag me on any one of my socials so I can repost it.

DIY Maxi Skirt 1 (Tutorial)

15 April 2019

 Hey peeps,

Long time no talk, not too long I hope.

I've been sewing up a storm, trying to meet up my deadline for the #RYRTW2019 sewing challenge.
But, I also found time to sew a gathered maxi skirt with some ankara fabric I have from many moons ago.

I decided to make this diy maxi skirt after I realized I didn't have any (ankara) maxi skirts, but, as I'm writing this I just took a mental inventory and realized I only have one other ankara skirt, which is a pencil skirt.

“This situation needs to be handled ASAP”

Anyways, the thing I love most about this tutorial is that you can sew it any way you want.

My version of this diy maxi skirt is gathered and lined with in-seam pockets, you can decide to skip the gathers, lining, and pockets if you so choose.

You can make it a midi or mini gathered skirt, even change up the type of zipper you want( i have a zipper series), change the hem and waistband width, etc

Main skirt fabric
Lining fabric
Zipper 10"/12"( it's always safer to get a longer zipper than you think you'll need, you can always trim it later)
Matching thread for both fabrics
Some type of closure, here I use trouser tabs, but you can use a hook & eye(big ones) if you prefer.

Interfacing( i use a very light one here but use whichever you prefer)
Sharp scissors
Measuring tape
Hand needle & Thread
Sewing Machine (no brainer here....)

Now that we have all that out of the way, let's talk measurements........

waist = 34"
waistband = 2"
hem = 2"
full length = 43" (+ waistband)
skirt body = (FL - waistband) + (hem + seam allowance)
                     (43 - 2) + ( 2+ 1)
skirt gathers = waist x 1.7
skirt front (cut on fold) = (58/2) + 1" SA
                                             29 + 1
skirt back (cut 2x) = (29/2) + 1" SA
                                       14.5 + 1"

                                       15.5" (both pieces)

Also, this first part of the tutorial focuses on how to cut out the skirt, we will not be using a pattern here.

I'm teaching/guiding you on how to do everything from scratch.
