DIY Maxi Skirt 1 (Tutorial)

15 April 2019

 Hey peeps,

Long time no talk, not too long I hope.

I've been sewing up a storm, trying to meet up my deadline for the #RYRTW2019 sewing challenge.
But, I also found time to sew a gathered maxi skirt with some ankara fabric I have from many moons ago.

I decided to make this diy maxi skirt after I realized I didn't have any (ankara) maxi skirts, but, as I'm writing this I just took a mental inventory and realized I only have one other ankara skirt, which is a pencil skirt.

ERRRRRRRRRRR

NOTE-TO-SELF
“This situation needs to be handled ASAP”

Anyways, the thing I love most about this tutorial is that you can sew it any way you want.

My version of this diy maxi skirt is gathered and lined with in-seam pockets, you can decide to skip the gathers, lining, and pockets if you so choose.

You can make it a midi or mini gathered skirt, even change up the type of zipper you want( i have a zipper series), change the hem and waistband width, etc

SERIOUSLY, THIS IS WHY WE SEW RIGHT?

THINGS YOU'LL NEED
Main skirt fabric
Lining fabric
Zipper 10"/12"( it's always safer to get a longer zipper than you think you'll need, you can always trim it later)
Matching thread for both fabrics
Some type of closure, here I use trouser tabs, but you can use a hook & eye(big ones) if you prefer.

TOOLS
Interfacing( i use a very light one here but use whichever you prefer)
Sharp scissors
Measuring tape
Hand needle & Thread
Sewing Machine (no brainer here....)

Now that we have all that out of the way, let's talk measurements........

THESE MEASUREMENTS I'M WRITING HERE ARE MINE, USE YOURS.

**MEASUREMENTS**
** I'M USING 0.5" SEAM ALLOWANCE (SA) FOR THIS TUTORIAL**
waist = 34"
waistband = 2"
hem = 2"
full length = 43" (+ waistband)
skirt body = (FL - waistband) + (hem + seam allowance)
                     (43 - 2) + ( 2+ 1)
                     44"
skirt gathers = waist x 1.7
                            ~58"
skirt front (cut on fold) = (58/2) + 1" SA
                                             29 + 1
                                               30"
skirt back (cut 2x) = (29/2) + 1" SA
                                       14.5 + 1"

                                       15.5" (both pieces)

Also, this first part of the tutorial focuses on how to cut out the skirt, we will not be using a pattern here.

HERE'S THE 2ND PART & THE 3RD PART

I'm teaching/guiding you on how to do everything from scratch.

I PROMISE, IT IS EASY.
